In this mini Poker Article I will try to explain what is a Satellite Poker Tournament!!!

A satellite poker tournament is a low buy-in poker tournament that awards the winner(s) an entry to a higher buy-in poker tournament.
A satellite tournament may consist of one poker table or many.

So we can say that a a Satellite Poker Tournament is a multi-tiered approach to winning major poker tournaments.

For example, in Odds Poker you can have 100 players might enter a $2 Satellite, with the total prize pool of $200.

Based on this prize pool, winners will be paid out with Satellite coupons to a higher buy-in poker tournament.

These coupons could be $10, $50 or even one $200 coupon, which would in turn be used to enter a higher level of Online Poker Satellites, one step closer to the poker grand final.

So as you can see there isn’t much secrets in what satellites poker tournaments are, what you must retain is that normally this is could be your ticket to big poker prizes, with little investment….

Cheers and happy poker online!

Play Heads-Up

Seize The Showdown

If you want to win poker tournaments you’ve got to be a skilled heads-up poker player.
It hurts more to make it all the way to heads-up and finish second, than it does to be the first player out of a tournament.
Remember, a second-place finish in a World Series of Poker event pays less and doesn’t come with the infamy of winning a WSOP bracelet.

With the advent of online poker rooms such as the OddsPoker Room, you can now practice your heads-up play whenever you want without grinding through an entire tournament and hoping luck occasionally finds you.
All poker rooms offer one-on-one heads-up tourneys or multi-table heads-up tourneys in which you can test your heads-up skills.

When you finally get down to just yourself and one other player in a poker tournament, it’s time to change gears.
Heads-up play should be played differently than how you would play a table with three or more players.
The worst thing you can do is continue playing the same way, especially if you were playing tight.
Tight play should be abandoned when you reach heads-up.

Winning while playing heads-up is all about one thing… Aggression!
If you’re not aggressive you’ll need luck to win, and you’ll likely end up getting repeatedly crushed by your opponents.
Scared money never lasts because once your opponent picks up on your tame play, they’ll run over you with big bets.
Since there’s just the two of you, most flops will be a dud for both players.
You need to be aggressive because the only way to win a pot it to have the best hand or cause your opponent to fold.
Don’t give your opponent free cards and free looks at the flop.
Be aggressive and make them pay to play.

One thing a lot of beginner poker players don’t realize is that the value of your starters changes considerably in a heads-up situation.
This about how valuable a hand like Q-8 whould be on a full table…
It isn’t really a hand you would want to play very often.
However, in heads-up play the general consensus is that you want to play any hand that has a vaule of Q-7 or higher.
Experts (and a computer) have worked out that hands valued Q-7 or higher will win more than 50% of the time during heads-up play.

This leads to two other important aspects of heads-up play:
Trapping, and reading your opponent.
By varying your play you can trap your opponent when you have the nuts and bleed a ton of chips out of him.
By occasionally betting and raising with nothing, this will make it harder to read your play when you actually have a hand.

While making your own bluffs and traps, carefully observe your opponent for betting patterns, tells and other gateways.

  • How often do they raise?
  • Do they only raise preflop with certain cards?
  • How often do they call your raise?
  • Do they call your raise with draws or with made hands?

Answering these questions will help you make the right decision when it’s your turn to act.

One last tip on heads-up play:
Don’t be afraid to occasionally chase flush and straight draws if it won’t cost you too much.
If you hit these draws heads-up they’ll often pay off big and make you more money then you will lose when occasionally chasing.

So remember these poker tips about heads-up when you play online poker!

Most true poker rookies seem to end up in the same place in most poker tournaments – as the short stack.
If you’re constantly ending up with fewer chips you’ve got to learn to dig yourself out of that hole or you’ll never make the big money.

The first thing to remember when your chip stack is running low is to be patient.
If you’ve just had a big hand nearly bankrupt you, don’t simply go all-in on the next hand because you think your chances of winning are gone.
To truly have a shot at getting back among the chip leaders you need some patience, and a little luck.

Since you have so few chips the hands you can play before and after the flop are limited.
You’ll want to get into a mindset of either all-in or fold.
You’re going to need to think like this to have a chance at rebuilding your stack.
If you still have enough chips to survive a few rounds of blinds, wait for real premium hands and go all-in.
This is your best chance of doubling up, or if you’re playing at the right table, possibly tripling up or more.

If the blinds haven’t reached monumental heights yet and you still have enough chips to see a couple flops, do it with medium to premium hands.
If you hit anything on the flop be aggrevisse and come out betting.
Even if you only end up with what’s already in the pot at least your stack is going growing again. If you’ve got a read on any of your opponents now is the time to use it.
If you come up against a tight player, try to steal the pot when you think they might be weak even if you’ve got nothing yourself.
If you’re up against a loose player, try to wait for a big hand and bet big since you can almost be assured they will call.

If you’re down to your last chip and will be forced all-in the next time the blinds come your way, your next play should be determined by position.
In an early position you should go all-in with any medium hand or higher.
You’re basically hoping to get lucky here with the blinds coming right behind you.
If you get a junk hand fold it and hope for something better in the blinds position.

In a middle position tighten up a bit and play any ace, any pocket pair or any two face cards.
If you end up hitting on the flop with one of these hands, you should have a good chance at winning or even doubling up.

In late position you’ve got more time before the blinds get you so don’t bet anything unless it’s a great starting hand.
Don’t be affraid to let go of mediocre cards if a player ahead of you goes all-in, especially if this player generally plays tight.
